In quest to transform live hoods of people, Machinga District has launched a District Development Plan and Social Economic Profile for Machinga District Council prepared to serve as a mile stone road map for the development of the district. The launch which was witnessed by YES I do alliance, a movement constituting 5 organizations which includes CHRR, CYECE, Plan International, FPAM, and Amref Health Africa, is set to promote inclusive community development in Machinga District.  The plan which has an overarching strategy aimed at building a productive, competitive and resilient nation will see the district being transformed with systematic development initiatives powered by the district council and relevant stakeholders. The Plan is set to guide in the designing and implementation of various projects aimed at uplifting the lives of people of Machinga in TA Liwonde. Inside the plan are provisions of the Malawi Growth Development Strategies (MGDS 111) which are also vital in implementation.  The launch which was highly patronized by the alliance partners, CSOs representatives, health service providers, Bank and government officials was a milestone step to increase awareness and collective understanding of social development economy.  Machinga is one of the districts in the Southern Region with high rate of child marriages related cases and school dropouts among teenagers. The coming of the alliance has planted a relief in alleviating the vice.

yesSpeaking to one of the lead alliance partners who attended the occasion, CHRR’s Head of Civic Education, Thandizo Mphwiyo, said the plan was a revelation for better redress of the various challenges the district faces. “We have always been frontrunners in making sure that communities attain the best development initiatives at all levels, this is why we extended our intervention to support the launch of the development plan and social economic profile” she said. Sharing the same note, District Tradition Authority Sitola said “the development plan was all what the community was waiting for in their area such that the launch was welcome and satisfying development”.

Yes, I do Alliance is hopeful that the development plan will not only address the community challenges but also the plight of young people who are prone and subjected to abuse such as child marriage. The alliance which started in 2016 with the objective of addressing sexual reproductive health issues including child marriages in Machinga has held several Interventions which have helped to address a number of key issues of child marriage through advocacy with the help of community led supporting groups. The alliance is being supported by the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry in Netherlands.
