Serving Both Ends: The Salima Solar Project Follow Up

The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation has been making follow up visits to Salima  to contribute to the intended development of the Salima solar photovoltaic project through the Both Ends Foundation. The key objectives of this project are to enhance capacity building of community volunteers and various community structures on human rights, land laws and accountability mechanisms, to ensure the compliance of JCM power, a Canadian-based renewable energy company that develops and operates renewable energy projects in growth markets. The activity was carried out to ensure JCM complies with environmental and social standards and to ensure comprehensive flow of information from itself to the community members.

CHRR has noted favorable impacts of the continued engagement with community members through the established accountability clubs where community members have become more open to share their concerns and participate in dialogue sessions with relevant duty bearers. They also support in advocating for access to information of projects, striving to ensure that project financiers take up the responsibility of ensuring that affected communities are equipped with relevant project information. CHRR has been a key player in offering support to the community to realize this.
