In a bid to ensure every eligible voter is registered for the forthcoming elections, the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), in collaboration with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), recently held a series of awareness sessions in Mangochi District. These awareness’s, with financial support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on a project “Enhancing the Participation of the General Public in the 2025 General Elections”, focused on informing the public about the supplementary voter registration dates set for 21st and 22nd January, 27th and 28th January as well as 3rd and 4th February 2025.
The Supplementary Voter Registrations are specifically designed to cater to individuals who were unable to register during the initial phases due to not having received their National ID numbers from the National Registration Bureau (NRB). This initiative aims to ensure that no one is left behind and that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.
Maxwell Mapopa Mvula, Programs Officer at CHRR, emphasized the importance of the awareness sessions. “Our goal is to empower the people in the country by providing them with the information they need to register and vote. Voting is not only a civic duty but also a fundamental human right. It is crucial that everyone, especially those who were unable to register due to the delay in receiving their National ID numbers, understands that they still have a chance to participate in the democratic process,” said Mvula.
He further highlighted the role of CHRR in facilitating the sessions. “We are committed to ensuring that all citizens are informed about their rights and responsibilities. With support from UNDP, we have been able to reach a wide audience in the country, ensuring that no one misses out on the opportunity to be part of the election process.”
Rodrick Kazembe, the Mangochi District Elections Officer from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), also shared his thoughts on the supplementary voter registration process. “MEC is dedicated to ensuring that every eligible voter is registered and ready to vote. The supplementary registration on the 21st and 22nd of January is an important opportunity for those who missed the initial registration due to issues with their National IDs. We are working closely with CHRR to make sure that these sessions are accessible to all,” said Kazembe.
Kazembe also emphasized the importance of peacekeeping during the elections. “In addition to ensuring that everyone is registered, it is equally important to promote peace during the election process. We are committed to ensuring a peaceful and fair election, and that is why we are working closely with CHRR to foster a peaceful environment where all citizens can exercise their right to vote without fear or intimidation,” he said.
As Mvula and Kazembe emphasized, voting is a fundamental human right that shapes the future of the nation. CHRR, MEC, and UNDP are committed to ensuring that every eligible citizen in Mangochi and Malawi as a whole has the chance to register and vote in the upcoming elections. They are also dedicated to promoting peace and security, ensuring that the election process remains peaceful and inclusive for all.
With the supplementary voter registration exercise fast approaching, it is crucial for all eligible voters to take action. The supplementary registration dates are a final opportunity for those who were unable to register previously due to National ID delays. Don’t miss out—your vote is your voice in shaping the future of Malawi!
