Malawi is for the first time commemorating the Open Government week joining the Global Annual Open Government (OG) Week celebrations themed “Promoting Transparency, Accountability and Citizen Engagement”.
CHRR is part of this milestone.
The OGP is a partnership where state and non-state actors (Government and Civil Society) work together to strengthen governance and make the government open and more accountable to its citizens.
Having joined the global OGP initiative in 2013, Malawi is implementing a two year National Action Plan (2023-2025 NAP) that focuses on improving engagement, efficiency, accountability and transparency in five key thematic areas namely: Open Parliaments, Anti Corruption, Access to Information, Digital Governance and Natural Resources.
CHRR is part of the OGP and Co-Chairs the Access to Information Technical Working Group (TWG) and also seats in the Digital Governance TWG.
During the launch which was graced by Minister of Mining Monica Chang’anamuno, there are suggestions however that as the country races through finalizing implementation of the five key areas in the current two year NAP, which is on truck; there’s need to review timeframe for the next NAP to at least four years for more positive impact.
