The Malabo Protocol and the need for Malawi to ratify the Protocol

July 14th 2022, Lilongwe, Malawi; The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) in partnership with the African Court Coalition organized a one-day stakeholders engagement meeting on the sensitization of the Protocol on Amendments to the Protocol on the Statute of the African Court of Justice and Human Rights (the Malabo Protocol). The meeting themed; “The Malabo Protocol and the need for Malawi to ratify the Protocol” took take place yesterday, July 14th 2022 at Lilongwe Hotel with an objective to create awareness on the Malabo Protocol and emphasise on the need for its ratification by Malawi government.

The stakeholders’ engagement meeting provided an opportunity for discussions on the innovations of the Malabo Protocol and areas of improvement, as well as enhancing awareness among stakeholders on the importance of its ratification.

To date, eight years after its adoption in 2014, only 15 States have signed the Malabo Protocol and none has ratified it. The current signatories to the Malabo Protocol are; Benin, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Kenya, Mozambique, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Sao Tome & Principe, Togo and Uganda.

The African Court Coalition calls upon all AU Member States to ratify the Malabo Protocol which will help in addressing and enhancing international justice across the continent.
